Service analyses of biological material @BCCM/LMG

A broad range of service analyses are available to profit and non-profit customers for the identification, typing and characterization of bacteria. In addition, BCCM/LMG also offers assays for antimicrobial susceptibility testing and microbiological activity testing.

Techniques are chosen case by case based on a number of preliminary tests and taking into account the aim of the assignment. Well-validated and up-to-date in-house databases and specialized software are used for optimal data processing and interpretation.

Service reports are included in the price, and can be either summarized or detailed as requested by the customer. Information about service prices can be found in our price list.

Cyanobacteria Collection (BCCM/ULC)

Identification and characterization at BCCM/ULC

Cyanobacterial strains can be sent for identification by a polyphasic approach: microscopic observations and molecular characterization based on a part of the rRNA operon (including the 16S rRNA and the ITS). A phylogenetic analysis will be done.

Other molecular techniques may be chosen case by case based on a number of preliminar data and taking into account the aim of the assignment.
Reports can be either summarized or extended according to the instructions of the customer.
A cost estimate is made on request.

 

Fungi

Biomedical Fungi and Yeasts (BCCM/IHEM)

Isolation and identification of filamentous fungi and yeasts

BCCM/IHEM can isolate filamentous fungi and yeasts form a wide variety of substrates of clinical and environmental origin.
Living cultures can also be submitted for identification. The default identification is based on macroscopical and microscopical examination of morphology and physiological testing. Analysis of DNA sequences of taxonomic relevance is performed with the agreement of the client about extra-cost. For related costs see price list.

Antifungal susceptibility testing

Minimal Inhibitory Concentrations of the antifungal agents voriconazole, fluconazole, itraconazole and amphotericin B, terbinafine and flucytosine are determined by the EUCAST broth microdilution method.

Isolation and identification of fungal strains

Microbial audits and the isolation and identification of fungal strains from a wide variety of substrates, excluding those of clinical origin, cover all groups of fungi.

  • Detection, enumeration, isolation
    BCCM/MUCL offers analyses of ex-situ samples and on-site sampling from industries and indoor environments including substrates such as food, animal feed, soil, building materials, packaging materials, cosmetics, and works of art to detect possible fungal colonization or contamination. The enumeration and isolation of fungi, usually followed by their identification, may allow conclusions for the management of the fungal colonization and its causes.
  • Identification
    Different identification techniques are applied based on preliminary tests or in agreement with the specific requirements of the client. Available techniques are light- microscopy, physiological profiling, DNA-sequencing of pertinent genetic markers and DNA-fingerprinting by microsatellite primed PCR. Preferably living pure cultures are to be submitted for identification together with all relevant information on the substrate of isolation.

 

Material resistance testing

The resistance of a wide range of materials (e.g. adhesives, cork, packaging materials, paint, textiles, wood) against fungal damage can be performed using protocols and control strains according to international standards.

 

Bioassays of fungicides and fungistatic compounds

The performance of antifungal agents can be tested using protocols and control strains according to international standards.

Plasmid profile analysis

By default, this customized contract service allows the analysis of non-pathogenic, bacterial strains for the presence of natural, middle- and high-copy number plasmids of max. 20.000 bp by agarose gel electrophoresis of non-digested plasmid DNA.

Before sending material, it is advisable to contact BCCM/LMBP to make sure that the material to be analysed is within its scope and technical capabilities, to discuss extra requirements (e.g. low copy plasmid profile, large plasmids profile, …) and to be informed of the price offer.
